Brief History

Leslie Bohm founded Catalyst Communication – originally named Bicycle Products
Corporation – in 1985.

For 10 years before that, Leslie co-owned Eclipse Inc., a maker of luggage and accessories for bicycles and motorcycles. While Leslie traveled the country with his Eclipse sales representatives, he noticed that most retailers enjoyed the activities and equipment they promoted but they disliked marketing.

He also observed the need for a "mediator" to help manufacturers and retailers cooperate together to get their messages to consumers. A "catalyst" would help this happen.

Hence the birth of what would become Catalyst Communication.

Catalyst plays a crucial role in helping cycling and outdoor retailers build and clean their customer lists. Then by combining so many retailers into a single campaign, Catalyst enables retailers to reach new audiences of qualified prospects with world-class marketing materials.

Catalyst works with the industry's top retailers and suppliers and helps them market all the key brands they sell.

A few of our major programs over the years are listed below:

Cycling Guide
When the first Cycling Guides reached customers in 1986, the success was immediate. Suppliers told their stories in a slick publication that rivaled the glossiest magazines. Retailers reached their most qualified customers. And customers appreciated the product information and tips throughout the season.

Bicycle SuperSale®
For over 20 years, the SuperSale promotion has been the bicycle industry's largest promotional event. SuperSale is a "shot in the arm" for bike sales. The sales run twice each year, in Spring and Summer, and inject the market with deals to create store traffic. The SuperSale message is a "green" message: Go By Bike.

Bicycle Business Conference
Catalyst created the Bicycle Business Conference in 1988 as a way to help clients as individuals and strengthen ties between bicycle retailers and suppliers. The conference has taken place 10 times. The combination of top speakers, relevant topics and superior service made it the leading event of its kind. Leslie has also helped manage the program at the Bicycle Leadership Conference presented by the National Bicycle Dealer Association and the Bicycle Products Suppliers Association.

Outdoor Guide
In Spring 2004 the first Outdoor Guide united outdoor suppliers, retailers and customers in a full-color, fact-filled magalog based on the Cycling Guide concept.
